My story

Like many people in my profession, I didn’t start out wanting to be a financial adviser. The world of financial advice found me. I was standing in a queue in a bank. I had plenty of time to observe and listen. No one was smiling. All were worried about money in some way, shape or form. I was worried about money. The managing director of the firm I’d been working for had just had to make the tough decision to shut everything down. I was in the bank to request a mortgage break.

My Dad is a very ethical man. Then, as managing director of a Limited Company, he had a responsibility to ensure it remained solvent at all times. After several blows to the company’s future, including a major fire, he judged the time to close was when everyone had paid him what he was owed, he paid out to those he owed including all the staff.

My father made the right decision at the right time, making sure everyone was looked after and as few people as possible affected.

My next visit was to the bank to seek advice. Whilst in conversation I was asked if I was interested in applying for a role available in the bank. That’s where I spent a number of years forming my wisdom around money.

Working for a financial institution was always going to have its limiting factors. All roads lead to selling one of its financial products which customers may or may not need. I found myself with a desire to serve clients with complete independence and decided to set up on my own in 2005.
